A biodiversity possum control operation will begin around the edge of Wairoa this month.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will be working with Wairoa District Council on the programme to improve the biodiversity of the area.

The overall goal is to reduce possum numbers to a low level in Wairoa to enhance biodiversity and improve the community’s lifestyle.

The Regional Council’s Biosecurity Team Leader - Animal Pests, Allan Beer says, “the work is part of the Regional Council’s urban programme which has resulted in more native birds, flourishing trees and gardens, and less damage to sheds and homes.”

“Contractors will use a variety of methods to ensure an efficient and safe control programme, and residents can decide the type of control method they want on their property.”

“Contractors will contact all property owners or residents whose land they would like to access and will need the landowners signed permission before they start control work on a property,” said Mr Beer.

The programme is supported by Wairoa District Council, and as with any community programme, the success depends on the level of community support.

Landowners will be able to discuss signs of possums, control and trap methods with the contractor.

For more information about this community programme contact contractor, Jake Bowcock of Regional Pest Services on +64 21 280 2988.
