Local homeowners are being warned to watch for Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), as they work on their flood damaged properties.
There have been several loads of waste collected by Council’s bulk disposal teams, and building materials disposed of at the landfill, that have contained potential ACM.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said dealing with asbestos is a complex process. Asbestos is particularly hazardous when it is dry and inhaled. “Asbestos waste is also hazardous, and procedures need to be followed during disposal to avoid contamination.
“The Health and Safety (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 place restrictions on the work that can be done on asbestos and Asbestos Containing Materials. The Wairoa landfill requires a permit to dispose of ACM.
“We want to make sure homeowners, contractors, volunteers and any groups helping with damaged housing and partial demolition of flood affected properties are aware of the risks and hazards of asbestos. People working at the coalface need to be informed around the seriousness of handling asbestos material, including being able to identify and correctly manage ACM.”
