Native life thriving at Whakamahia

Whakamahia Lagoon

Controlling pests at Whakamahia Lagoon is allowing the birds and plants to thrive.

Since the Whakamahia trap line was installed a total of 88 pests have been captured.

Rats make up the highest number of pests being trapped with 26 rats caught since the line was installed.

This year, up to mid-September, 15 pests have been captured comprising 12 rats and three mustelids such as ferrets or weasels.

A total of 32 double traps were placed around the perimeter of the Whakamahia Lagoon as part of the pest eradication initiative which was passed to the Matangirau Reserves Board from the Department of Conservation.

Traps are serviced weekly with volunteers monitoring the traps.

Wairoa District Council interim chief executive officer Kitea Tipuna said the project is a great way of attracting conservationists to assist with the local environment while protecting the habitat and watching it regenerate.

Council is always looking for more volunteers and encourages anyone who is keen to be involved with the Whakamahia Lagoon project to contact the Council offices.
