Dog attack investigations underway

Two dogs have been euthanised following a vicious dog attack on a woman in a residential street in Wairoa on Tuesday afternoon.

Directly following the attack, Wairoa District Council staff impounded two dogs and following subsequent investigations, the owner surrendered ownership of the dogs to the Council.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little visited the grandmother who was attacked while on her mobility scooter. “I visited her in Hawke’s Bay Hospital, and I was impressed with how positive she was considering the ordeal she had been through and the horrific injuries she suffered.

“Thank you to those heroes who came to her aid and helped prevent this attack from being even worse. Wairoa will always be grateful, your unselfish actions were very brave.

“It is reassuring that these dogs will no longer be a threat to the public. All dog owners need to be responsible for looking after their dogs to prevent random attacks like this, which can be life-changing for the victims, their families and those involved. We need our streets to be safe for everyone. We also need to remember that while it is dogs that carry out attacks, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure their dogs are secured and kept under control at all times.”
