A small crowd gathered below Pilot Hill today to mark the occasion of one year on from the June south side flooding.
Organised by the Wairoa Recovery Team, the gathering was not an anniversary or celebration, but an opportunity to bring impacted whānau and the wider Wairoa community together to reflect on the June and Cyclone Gabrielle events, and how far we have come together in our Recovery journey.
Rātana Āpotoro Wairua Kitea Tipuna gave the karakia, followed by a waerea from Duane Culshaw who was impacted by the flooding.
The group then walked into town along the Wairoa Riverside Walkway to Gemmells for light refreshments.
This evening, a free ‘Unplugged Whānau' seated concert will be held at the Gaiety Theatre from 5.30-7.30pm.
