HBAF 2025 - Deva Mahal

HBAF 2025 - Deva Mahal

Born with the blues in her blood, Deva Mahal brings her powerhouse voice and masterful songwriting to Hawke’s Bay for one night only.

Raised in Kaua‘i and discovering her voice in Aotearoa, Deva has forged a sound that blends soul, blues, gospel and R&B. Her music is known for its ability to express profound joy and deep sorrow, often leaving audiences moved to tears. Her 2018 debut album Run Deep marked the start of a bold solo career, followed by a string of singles and collaborations across the US, Europe and New Zealand.

She’s performed at world-renowned venues and festivals including the Hollywood Bowl, Bonnaroo, Carnegie Hall and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Her voice has featured on Grammy-winning albums and film soundtracks, and she’s shared the stage with artists such as Etta James, The Roots, Björk, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Ladi6.

Deva’s latest release South Coast launched in May 2025, following a sold-out European tour and a headline appearance at the 2025 Wellington Fringe Festival.

Her Hawke’s Bay performance as part of the 2025 Festival offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive voices, live in an intimate setting.
