Caution urged on local roads during construction season

Council Logo

Wairoa District Council is reminding motorists, residents and visitors to take extra care on our roads as the district enters the peak of its construction season.

The warmer months allow construction crews to complete essential work across our district — including resealing, drainage upgrades, and safety improvements. These projects strengthen the resilience of our network and ensure our roads remain safe for everyone.

Council is also asking the community to be especially mindful of the people working on our roads during this period.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Matt Lawson said while road works can be inconvenient, behind every high-vis vest is a person trying to get home safely.

“Our contractors work long hours in difficult conditions, often metres from moving traffic. They all want the same thing as the rest of us — to get home safely at the end of each day. Slowing down through road works takes only a few extra seconds, but it makes a world of difference to the people working on our roads.”

 Key safety reminders for motorists

  • Slow down when approaching road work sites. Reduced speeds protect road workers and road users.
  • Follow all temporary signage and the directions of stop/go operators.
  • Expect minor delays and allow extra time for travel.
  • Be patient and respectful. Aggressive or unsafe behaviour puts lives at risk.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones when near construction areas.

What to expect this season

Council has several projects scheduled across the district, including:

  • Road resurfacing and pavement strengthening
  • Culvert and drainage replacements
  • Footpath renewals and accessibility improvements
  • Minor safety works such as signage, barriers, and intersection upgrades

Wairoa District Council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation during this busy period.
