Establishing a local steering group to drive a refreshed strategy for developing North Clyde was the focus of a recent community hui.
Wairoa District Councillors and staff met with community members and businesses to hear of the strengths and assets of the community, as well as aspirations and issues.
The ultimate goal is to establish steering groups throughout the district that are led and owned by the community and supported by the Council. These groups will develop grassroots community plans which can be used to seek external funding for community projects and also feed into the Council’s planning.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Matt Lawson said the elected members and Council are community-focused and want to hear community aspirations, make connections and engage with communities to find solutions rather than trying to solve complaints.
Discussions focused on North Clyde’s mixed industrial and residential zoning, and on where improvements could be made to address dust issues, surface flooding, dumped vehicles, and rubbish.
Safe accessibility was a highlight with discussions around additional footpaths and road crossings to enable people to move easily and safely around North Clyde.
Funding has been set aside for a new North Clyde playground, with specifics such as the playground configuration and location discussed.
A focus area was the possible need to relocate the Alexandra Park skatepark due to Flood Mitigation works. North Clyde rangatahi Markus Pohe and Zackiray Dawson are keen skatepark users and shared their thoughts on a potential new park which would cater to a variety of ages and skill levels.
