New rangatahi pathway launched

Youth initiative

A positive pathway for youth voice and leadership has been launched through a new platform.

Ka Hao te Rangatahi is a partnership between Wairoa Taiwhenua and the Wairoa District Council, spearheaded by Wairoa Taiwhenua Trustees Esta Wainohu and Maria Cairns, and Council elected members Michelle Tahuri and Trevor Waikawa.

The new initiative is an opportunity for rangatahi to have a real say, build leadership skills and help shape the future for the young people of Wairoa.

“This kaupapa is about supporting the next generation of rangatahi leaders to grow, thrive and lead with confidence, say Councillors Tahuri and Waikawa.

“Ka Hao te Rangatahi is more than just meetings. We want to provide mentors to walk alongside our rangatahi and provide wrap-around support and ultimately strengthen leadership pathways in Wairoa. This is about hearing and sharing rangatahi voice and being part of a kaupapa that gives back to the community. Through engagement, we want to be able to plan for the future by enabling better decisions by listening to rangatahi voices, which will influence long-term planning and investment.”

Ka Hao te Rangatahi is aimed at rangatahi aged 18-30 from across the Wairoa district, with no experience needed. The commitment will be project-driven with opportunities to learn, grow, and be supported every step of the way.

This week, expressions of interest from potential board members opened, with the appointment of board members and the community launch in April.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said he is thrilled to see an approach that aims to genuinely and authentically represent the youth voice.

“Council has always recognised the importance of engaging with our rangatahi. Historically, the Council has supported initiatives such as Yroa Ynot and the Youth Council, and the learnings from these groups have served as a foundation for Ka Hao te Rangatahi. The structure around Ka Hao te Rangatahi will see rangatahi holding the pen where they are mentored, not managed, and can have a real influence. We are fortunate to have the passion of councillors Tahuri and Waikawa and the support of Wairoa Taiwhenua. This is a fantastic opportunity for our two entities to work in a meaningful partnership. As a Council, we are really excited to have this new approach and look forward to watching this group and future leaders grow.”

Ka Hao te Rangatahi will comprise 12 rangatahi trustees, representing a diverse range of backgrounds, including rural and urban, Māori and non-Māori, and a wide range of lived experiences. To register your interest email: esta@kahungunu.iwi.nz
