On Tuesday 7 April NZTA are starting work to repair a retaining wall on SH2 above Tangoio Falls Scenic Reserve, about 25km north of Napier.
The slope beneath the road has been compromised by erosion and loss of vegetation, and because this is a steep, narrow section of highway, specialist crews are needed to safely stabilise the area. The team will install 51 ground anchors — each between 10 and 12 metres long — to secure the slope under the retaining wall. Once installed, the anchors will be covered with shotcrete (liquid concrete) to complete the strengthening work.
This project is similar to the successful stabilisation work completed just south of this site by the Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) alliance last year.
To allow our crews to work safely, SH2 will be reduced to one lane under stop/go traffic management. This also provides space for essential machinery and drilling equipment. Work will take place between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and is expected to take around 9 weeks, weather permitting. Delays of 5 minutes are expected.
These repairs must be completed during daylight hours due to the steep drop‑off beside the worksite and the heavy machinery involved.
