Wairoa District Council is continuing its targeted approach to encourage Wairoa dog owners to follow the rules.
Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said recent dog attacks in New Zealand, including a fatality, are a stark reminder of the severity of dog attacks.
“Last year, in Wairoa, we experienced a couple of terrible dog attacks, which resulted in horrific injuries, and the dogs that were responsible were euthanised. Dog owners need to understand that for the victims of a dog attack, the scars might eventually heal, but the trauma, the implications on their health, and the monetary costs can go on indefinitely.
“All dog owners need to look after their dogs to prevent random attacks, which can be life-changing for the victims, their families and those involved. While it is dogs that carry out attacks, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure their dogs are secured and kept under control at all times. People need to remember that others don't love your dogs as you love them.”
Mayor Little said ultimately, dog attacks are not just an issue with problem dogs, they are a people problem. “All dog owners must follow the regulations around dog ownership, and the Council will continue to take strong action to ensure compliance, to try our best to prevent attacks in the future.
“We have a zero tolerance for dogs that attack and owners who are not abiding by the rules. Our Council staff will continue to work hard to support our community, but change has got to start with dog owners being responsible and fulfilling the requirements of the Dog Control Act.
“Councils are responsible for administering, implementing, and enforcing Dog Control legislation, but dog owners are responsible for their dogs’ behaviour and for keeping them secure and under control.
“I urge anyone who sees a wandering dog, or has concerns about whether dogs are securely contained, to please contact the Council immediately. We need to work together in partnership and not be complacent and allow irresponsible dog ownership to become normalised.”
