Roading connectivity that was compromised by bridge damage in Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to be completed by the middle of this year.
Work is underway to replace the Waikari Bridge on Glenbrook Road and repair Te Puna Bridge on Mangapoike Road.
The Waikari Bridge has a $7 million budget, predominantly funded by the Central Government.
The original bridge was destroyed by Cyclone Gabrielle and replaced with a temporary ford.
Work on the new 75-metre conventional three-span bridge is underway and, weather permitting, could be completed by June.
HM Civil Structures (HMCS) holds the contract, with retaining walls to protect and strengthen the abutments currently being constructed.
The bridge is positioned in a new location and will sit higher to improve resilience. The temporary ford will be removed once the new bridge is open.
Meanwhile, structural repair of the Te Puna Bridge is also underway, with work being carried out by local contracting company QRS. The bridge piers were damaged in flood events with a $3 million predominantly government-funded budget for the repair work, which is expected to take six months.
