What |
Essential bridge strengthening work on the Wairakaia Rail Bridge. Crews will carry out dowel installation on the rail bridge. For safety reasons, the road needs to be fully closed while this work takes place. |

When |
Roadworkers are working at bridge worksite, including installing scaffolding on the sides of the bridge. Day works are underway 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday. Some temporary traffic management including short stop/go and temporary speed limits may sometimes be in place ahead of the night closures.
If you’re travelling between Gisborne and Wairoa, or Gisborne and Napier, you will need to allow sufficient travel time to make it through the rail bridge before the closure starts. |

This work is weather dependent, and the dates and times are subject to change at short notice. Please refer to the contingency dates below. Please check NZTA Journey Planner at journeys.nzta.govt.nz or the NZTA Hawke’s Bay & Gisborne Facebook page at facebook.com/nztahbg for further information. |
Traffic impacts during closures: There is no viable detour during the closure times. Hard closures will be in place from Nicks Head Station Road to Coop Road, with turnaround areas for all vehicles available at both closure points.
Emergency services: During the night closures, emergency services will be assisted through the site if required.
Residents access: Access will be maintained for residents located between the closure points and up to either side of the rail bridge. There is no resident access available across the rail bridge during the closure times.
Contingency: The work is weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice. If delays occur, the contingency dates are Sunday 16, Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 August, 8pm to 4am each night, with the road reopening at 4am Wednesday 19 August.
