Animal Control Reminds Dog Owners of Their Responsibilities

Dog barking
During June and early July, Animal Control has received an increased number of reports about dogs roaming freely and dogs being walked in public without a leash.
As the weather gets colder, it's important to remember that your dog's needs can change. Shorter days and cooler temperatures may mean reviewing their diet, bedding and security to ensure they remain healthy, comfortable and safely contained on your property.
Animal Control officers have spoken with several dog owners about walking their dogs without restraints. Keeping your dog on a lead gives you greater control and helps prevent unwanted incidents, particularly if another dog, person or unexpected situation arises.
Responsible dog ownership means:
  • Keeping your dog securely contained at home
  • Walking your dog on a lead in public places where required
  • Preventing your dog from roaming
  • Ensuring your dog has warm, dry bedding and appropriate shelter
  • Providing a nutritious diet suited to the colder months
  • Being considerate of other people, animals and the wider community
To ensure the safety of our community, any dogs found roaming will be impounded. Additionally, penalties will be enforced for those who fail to comply. Let's work together to keep our neighbourhoods safe!
Animal Control is asking all dog owners to take a few minutes to check that the right measures are in place both at home and when out in public. A responsible owner makes for a safer community and a safer dog.
If you come across a roaming dog or issues, taking preventative action can change the future you can contact the animal control team 24/7 by calling 06 838 7309.
We thank all those owners who lead the way, being great examples to our community by working together for safer communities and responsible dog ownership.
