Slower speeds rolling out around Hawke’s Bay schools

NZTA Web Banner

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will be installing variable speed limits (VSLs) outside seven local schools throughout June.

All seven schools have gates bordering state highways.

The new VSLs mean that during pick-up and drop-off times, speed limits outside these schools will have variable speed limits in place.

Speeds for schools on state highways will temporarily decrease to 30km/h or 60km/h, depending on the road, during school drop off and pick up times.

Outside those times, the usual speed limit applies – for some schools that’s up to 100km/h.

Electronic and static signs will make it clear when the lower limit is in effect.

NZTA Regional Manager of System Design, Lisa Faulknor says children are among our most vulnerable road users. Lower speeds reduce the risk and severity of crashes, giving drivers more time to react and making school zones safer for everyone.

This change is part of a nationwide programme under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024, which requires VSLs outside schools by 1 July 2026.

Installation work will be taking place until the end of June. Minimal disruption is expected, with some short stop/go traffic management in place at times while works are underway.
