Mayor elected to National Council

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little has been re-elected to the Local Government New Zealand National Council.

This is Mayor Little’s second term on the LGNZ National Council, which is the governing board and elected leadership of Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ). It sets the organisation's strategy and direction, develops and guides policy, and oversees its performance. The Council is made up of elected mayors, councillors, and chairs from around the country, with representation from geographical zones, sectors, and special committees.

Mayor Little said he is deeply passionate about the advocacy of LGNZ and the importance of representing all of New Zealand’s 78 local, regional, and unitary councils.

He said it is important that the Board works as a collective and decisions mirror the councils that are represented. He believes there is an opportunity to review how the National Council operates to better reflect the diverse needs of all councils.

Mayor Little described the challenges councils are facing, including affordability, inflation, and the prospect of rate capping, along with the push for centralisation and the erosion of localism, which threaten localised decision-making.

“Issues around Three Waters, climate resilience and changing weather patterns—plus housing, social issues, and health are increasing pressure on councils, now and into the future. LGNZ must be a strong advocate to champion, connect and support local government.

“It is an honour to have been elected to the National Council. This again increases Wairoa’s national profile and gives our Council a voice at the table and an opportunity to continue to make connections and build relationships.”
