Mahia Recycling Centre completed

Mahia recycling

Mahia’s new recycling centre was a hit over the busy summer season with around 24 tonnes of glass, cans, plastics and cardboard collected.

The new purpose-built centre at 376 Kaiwaitau Road opened just before Christmas and remained open through January 17 (excluding statutory holidays), staffed from 9am until midday.

The centre was predominantly funded through the Central Government Tourism Infrastructure Fund. Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the Mahia area has a large influx of people over the summer holiday period, and the recycling centre aims to provide an accessible facility to encourage people to deposit their recycling in the best way possible.

Mayor Little said it was great to see the centre well used over the holiday period, with around 7.7 tonnes of glass and 15.8 tonnes of plastic, cans, and cardboard collected. “A reminder, the centre only takes residential recyclables: food and drink glass, cans, tins, plastics 1,2,5 and cardboard. Please no general or green waste and no dumping.”

Built from four modified shipping containers, the centre is staffed from 9am-11am on the first and third Sundays of every month and is open daily during peak summer holiday times.
