The mayors of Central Hawke’s Bay, Hastings, Napier and Wairoa welcome yesterday’s Government announcement, which provides further clarity on proposed reforms to simplify local government.
Confirmation that Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will not continue beyond October 2028 gives the region greater certainty and allows councils to continue exploring options for a simpler, more effective local government model.
Hawke’s Bay councils have already been working proactively together to explore future options with independent facilitators Wayne Eagleson and Lawrence Yule. This work will continue as more information becomes available.
While more work needs to be done on developing options for the region, we are pleased that yesterday’s announcement sets out a clearer process for the region to put its ideas forward.
Ensuring community voice is heard will be critical throughout this process.
The mayors look forward to discussing the announcement with Minister Watts when he visits the region on 22 May.
