Artist Workshop: Making with Bioplastic led by Raewyn Tauira Paterson

Get your hands into something a little different with this workshop from Raewyn Tauira Paterson (Ngāi Tūhoe), whose work features in 'Te Matau-a-Māui Contemporary Art: Gwen Malden Trust Commissions'. She'll walk you through the materials and thinking behind her practice in a relaxed, hands-on session.

The workshop takes its inspiration from her newly commissioned series 'Every Breath You Take', which looks at bioplastic, natural forms, and the ties between water and the living world. Raewyn will show you how she turns simple, edible ingredients into bioplastic, sharing her own recipe along the way.

Using moulds made from pāua and seashells, participants will experiment with the material and discover how it can be transformed into sculptural forms. While the bioplastic is being prepared, participants will work with premade pieces to create their own necklace, using waxed thread to braid and assemble their piece to take home.

Raewyn's wider practice reworks pattern through a contemporary lens grounded in mātauranga Māori. 'Every Breath You Take' treats water as a living, ancestral presence and points to the ecological systems that keep life going.

No previous experience is required. All materials are provided.
