We are so extraordinarily lucky that she has agreed to do these shows. She is a powerful, dynamic, feisty songwriter in her own right.
Iona Zajac is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Edinburgh, Scotland. She’s coming to Hawkes Bay off the back of a three-week Aus/NZ tour with the Pogues, where she joins them in their new line-up as vocalist and harpist. She blends folk, indie and alternative music with an authentic grit that’s captivated audiences across Europe. An uncompromising ferocity courses through her songs, delivered with a tender, powerful voice and arpeggiated nylon string guitar.
Zajac’s solo work has an intense beauty, expect nods to solo bedroom EP, ‘Find Her in the Grass’, accompanied by darker themes and surrealist love songs from her newly released, critically acclaimed album, Bang. Having grown up playing traditional Scottish music and lived among Irish musicians in Dublin for a few years, she has a traditional repertoire that traverses 15th century ballads and Gaelic folksong, which she’ll also share with us in these shows.
Iona has toured with LANKUM, Lisa O’Neill, The Mercury Rev, Arab Strap, Alison Moyet, The Cinematic Orchestra, Hamish Hawk, Idlewild and more.
