A maximum of 30 minutes is available for members of the public to speak at the Council's public meetings, as indicated on the agenda. You are welcome to speak to Councillors on any item that is listed on the agenda. We ask that you are respectful in your comments to the Council.
Five minutes is allocated for each person speaking; out of courtesy to other members of the public you are asked to stay within the allocated time. If there are a large number of people wishing to speak it may be necessary to reduce the time in order to give each person a fair hearing.
Councillors will listen to what you have to say, however, they will not debate your comments with you during the meeting. Councillors may ask questions if there are any points requiring clarification. If you are not asked a question this does not imply disagreement with, or disinterest in, your comments. It means that your message has been understood. They may refer to your comments when the agenda item is debated.
Councillors or staff may not always be able to answer your questions at the public forum; this may need to be done through a verbal or written response at a later time depending on the complexity and availability of information.
Public Participation at meetings is about Council listening to what you have to say.
