Council’s vision for waste management is to manage waste in a cost-effective way that reduces harmful effects & improves efficiency of resource use. Part of this is the way Wairoa District Council delivers waste management services around the district, these services are listed below.
For Labour Weekend 2020 there is a change to the Tuai refuse and recycling collections.
The refuse collection will move to Wednesday 21 October (one day earlier).
The recycling collection will move to Thursday 22 October (one day earlier).
All other services will continue as per usual.
From 28th September 2020 only grades 1, 2, 5 rigid plastics will be accepted at kerbside collection. This is due to significant changes to
the global recycling market.
Grades 3, 4, 6, 7 include widely used items such as cleaning product bottles and polystyrene takeaway containers. There is no reputable
or sustainable market for these types of plastics.
Smart Environmental, our local contractor, will begin rejecting these grades of plastics from household kerbside collections as of 28
A non-compliance sticker system will be implemented from this day.
There will be a grace period of two weeks. During this time a sticker will be placed on your crate to let you know that items were placed in
your crate that are no longer being accepted. Your items will be still collected at this point.
After the two week period, our contractor will no longer be accepting plastics graded 3,4,6,7 and a sticker will be placed on your crate to
point out the reason your recycling was rejected.
We encourage the community to REDUCE, REUSE or completely AVOID these types of plastics where they can.
Grade 1 Rigid Plastics
e.g. Soft-drink & water bottles
Grade 2 Rigid Plastics
e.g. Milk bottles, ice cream containers, detergent bottles
Grade 5 Rigid Plastics

Grade 3 Plastics
