Working with food sellers

Wairoa District Council wants to work with food sellers to ensure safe and suitable food is produced and sold.

Under the requirements of the Food Act 2014, everyone working in the food industry has a responsibility to make sure the food that is sold to the public is safe and suitable to eat.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said the best advice for new food sellers is to contact the Council to check what requirements are needed.

“You may need to apply for a food registration, but this is a complex area, and some food sellers pose a higher risk than others, so it’s best to chat with the Council Environmental Health team to see where your business sits.

“Food sellers can come from fixed sites, online, or markets. The key, though, is that food is being hygienically prepared in a safe and suitable environment.

For businesses that already hold a food registration, it is your responsibility to ensure you renew your registration before it expires. You cannot renew an expired registration.

Council will send you a renewal application form before your notice of registration expires - so it is important to let us know if your email or postal address changes.
