External advice on Patangata Bridge sought

Patangata Bridge

The Wairoa District Council is seeking external advice in order to be in a better position to identify options for the repair of the Patangata Bridge at Whakaki.

In August the bridge was identified as structurally unsound for heavy traffic.

This resulted in a weight restriction being placed on the bridge.

Two bollards were installed as a mitigation measure to ensure that no injury or loss of life would occur as a result of heavy vehicles travelling across the bridge.

The placement of the bollards still allowed foot and quad bike access.

Last week Mayor Craig Little, Wairoa District Council CEO Steven May and staff met with a small group of Whakaki residents at the bridge site to discuss the situation.

Council expects to have the information it needs within a fortnight with Council representatives planning to again meet with members of the concerned group to plan a way forward.

Mr Little acknowledged the community’s frustration at the length of time it was taking to address the issue.

“Council is aware of the cultural and commercial concerns occurring as a result of the situation and will be working as quickly and efficiently as possible to find a solution.”
