Locals are encouraged to be prepared by taking part New Zealand ShakeOut 2019.
ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake and tsunami.
New Zealand ShakeOut is the national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi (walk).
Wherever you are at 1.30pm on Thursday, October 17, you can take part in the drill.
Just drop, cover and hold for up to one minute, and practice your tsunami hikoi with family friends or staff, uphill to your safe location.
People can take part by signing up for Shakeout 2019. To sign your school, organisation or household up to the drill head to getready.govt.nz.
There are lots of resources available with posters, factsheets and digital and social resources.
Don’t forget, wherever you are on Thursday, October 17, at 1.30pm today, just Drop, Cover and Hold for up to one minute.
