Road strengthening

NZTA Web Banner

State Highways in and around Wairoa are receiving a lot of attention, with motorists reminded to please drive carefully and stay safe.

Multiple recovery and repair projects are underway as part of the summer construction period, with State Highway 2 between Wairoa and Gisborne and Wairoa and Napier affected. Work is also underway on a stretch of SH38 between Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park and Tuai, which will involve a three-month nighttime closure to allow essential Cyclone Gabrielle underslip recovery work to be carried out.

The nighttime closure is from 1 December 2025 until Saturday 28 February 2026, with the road closed from 8pm to 6am six nights a week (Sunday night to Saturday morning). The road will be fully open during the Christmas break from Thursday, 18 December at 6am until Monday, 5 January at 8pm, and over the January 24-26 anniversary weekend.

Meanwhile, a section of road near Iwitea Road is being rebuilt to make it stronger.

Work began this week and is expected to take about a month, with the site under stop/go traffic management and delays of around 10 minutes likely.

Road rebuild works will also begin just south of Cricklewood Road from around November 10 to December 3.

This site will also be under stop/go traffic management, and delays of around 10 minutes are likely.
