ELECTIONS v2

Wairoa District Council is encouraging local people to participate in this year’s local body elections.

Council’s Chief of Operations and Deputy Electoral Officer, Juanita Savage, is urging people to check they’re enrolled and that their contact details are up to date — especially for those thinking about standing for Council or wanting to make sure their vote, and their voice, count.

“Elected members play a vital role in our communities. They are responsible for representing the interests of their constituents, developing policies, and overseeing the actions of the Council to which they are elected.

“Standing for Council is about stepping up to represent your whānau, community and values. Candidate nominations open on Friday, July 4 and close at noon on Friday, August 1.”

Mrs Savage also encouraged people to exercise their right to vote.

“In the last local body election in 2022, Wairoa was in the top 10 of New Zealand’s voter turnout. Wairoa’s final voter return was 53.2%, above the national average, and higher than the 2019 election of 51.4%.

Traditionally, Wairoa people have enjoyed making their vote count, and the response certainly speaks to a very healthy democracy in Wairoa. In comparison, voter returns for Napier were 39.54%, Hastings 32.95%, Central Hawkes Bay 43.89% and Gisborne 43.4%.”

This year, voting opens on September 9 with papers posted to enrolled voters between September 9 and 22. Voting closes at midday on Saturday, October 11- Election Day.
