Feedback on the Wairoa District Council’s Trading in Public Places policy is being sought.

The council is proposing to adopt a Trading in Public Places Policy to regulate the conduct of public trading and to ensure appropriate standards of public health, safety and visual amenities are maintained. The policy will also regulate the conduct of persons selling goods on streets, roads, footpaths, and other public places, including the conduct of persons using vehicles to sell goods and services to the public.

The objective of the policy is to ensure that trading and events in public places in and around the Wairoa District maintain appropriate standards of public health, safety, and accessibility; minimise the effects on existing businesses and private properties and promote social, cultural, and recreational opportunities in Wairoa.

This policy aims to take a proactive approach by providing guidelines for the following trading or trading-related activities on streets, roads and public places:

• Mobile Shop Trading

• Hawkers and Itinerant Traders

• Open-air markets

• Temporary events including evening/night events

• Outdoor dining and footpath stalls

• Community Food Stalls

• Any other trading activity.

Submissions on the Trading in Public Places Policy close on November 23 2023. For more information on the proposed policy and to make a submission please go to www.consultations.nz/wdc/

Submissions can also be made by email to feedback@wairoadc.govt.nz, by post or in-person to the Wairoa District Council Governance Team, 97 Queen Street, Wairoa.
