It’s dog registration time

Hey dog owners, it’s time to make sure your pets and working dogs are registered.

The Wairoa District Council dog registration period began on July 1, and if you register your dog before August 31, you can take advantage of discounted pricing.

Registering your dog with your local Council is part of being a responsible dog owner. Registration fees help fund a range of services designed to help dogs, their owners and the wider community.

There are five dog registration classification categories with discounted prices if dogs are registered before the end of next month (August 31).

Class W ($65) is working dogs as defined under Section 2 of the Dog Control Act 1996. This includes disability-assist dogs and dogs kept only for the purpose of driving or heading stock.

Class S ($110) is standard dogs, including most pets, companion, recreational, hunting and family dogs.

Class SO ($90) is the selected owner policy, where responsible dog owners who have applied and been granted this class receive a discounted fee each registration year to encourage owners to take good care of their dogs.

Class Q ($215) is for dogs classified as menacing or belonging to a breed or type or having been observed or had reported behaviour of a dog with characteristics typically associated with the dog’s breed or type which are, listed in Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996.

Class D ($275) is dogs classified as dangerous based on the behaviour of the dog on one or more occasions, or the dog owner of the dog has been convicted of an offence in relation to the dog under section 57A (2).

All dogs in New Zealand must be registered before they are three months old. You then need to re- register your dog every year.

Dog registration forms have been sent to dog owners via email or post, and this is a great opportunity to update your details and advise Council of any changes. Once you receive your registration notice, please make sure your details are correct and up to date, especially if you have or are moving out of the district or have changed the number of dogs you own.

If you have an owner file with the Wairoa District Council, you can register your dog/s and pay the registration fee online. If you don’t have an owner file yet, call Council, and a file can be set up in minutes.

If you would like more information or require assistance with registering your dog, the team is always happy to help. Head over to www.wairoadc.govt.nz or contact our Compliance Team compliance@wairoadc.govt.nz or phone Council on 06 838 7309.
