Barker Bridge strengthening

Barker Bridge Te Reinga Approach

The Barker Bridge on the Ruakturi Road is the next in line to receive some strengthening attention.

Work is expected to start on April 13, with the bridge, and road, closed to traffic during the period of Monday April 19 from 8am and reopening on Saturday April 24 at 5pm. It is expected all work will be completed by April 30.

The work is part of a district-wide bridge strengthening programme to meet the changes around HPMV (high productivity motor vehicles) ratios and open more HPMV routes throughout the regions.

The strengthening will be carried out by Quality Roading and Services (Wairoa) Ltd and there will be limited pedestrian access.

Wairoa District Council interim chief executive Kitea Tipuna acknowledged that residents in this area have already been affected by the three-week closure of the Doughboy Bridge in January and that this is a further disruption.
