Pryde Contracting has been shaping Wairoa’s landscape for almost 50 years, and the locally owned business is showing no signs of slowing down.

As the region’s trusted earthworks specialists continue to grow, they’re also breathing new life into North Clyde, transforming their expansive Carroll Street site into a vibrant multi-purpose business hub.

Second-generation owners Sam and Siobhan Pryde took the reins of the family-owned civil construction and earthmoving business from Sam’s parents, Hamish and Barb Pryde, two and a half years ago. Today, they’re building on a proud legacy while bringing fresh ideas, new services and exciting plans for the future.

With a skilled team of over 15 employees, Pryde Contracting has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality work across projects of every size—from large-scale civil construction and major rural developments through to residential jobs.

As a qualified Engineering Geologist, Sam combines geotechnical insight with practical engineering expertise to tackle complex challenges and deliver smart, cost-effective solutions. “We see ourselves as being in the problem-solving business and take pride in helping keep Wairoa and the wider region moving.”

The team’s expertise spans water reticulation, drainage, dam clearing, road construction, slip clearance, culvert installation, track building, metal and fill cartage, and fence-line preparation. Homeowners are catered for, with services including section clearing, house site preparation, retaining walls, demolition, and driveway construction and repairs.

Backed by an impressive fleet of machinery—from a state-of-the-art 25-tonne GPS-equipped excavator for precision work, through to a specialised tracked concrete mixer capable of reaching off-road or difficult sites—Pryde Contracting has the equipment and experience to tackle virtually any project.
The Pryde name is also well known for its vital work around the Wairoa River bar, where precision, local knowledge, and experience are essential.

Sam and Siobhan are also investing in Wairoa’s future through the redevelopment of their nearly three-hectare Carroll Street property. The former sawmill site is steadily being transformed into an industrial precinct with flexible spaces being refurbished to attract businesses and support local growth.

Siobhan said they are slowly upgrading buildings and creating spaces that can be customised for a range of industries and they would love to hear from businesses looking for opportunities to establish or expand.”

Sustainability is another area gathering momentum. Pryde Contracting now accepts unwanted concrete, crushing it into recycled aggregate that can be reused in roading and construction projects.
“Instead of sending waste concrete to landfill, we're giving it a second life. People can arrange to drop concrete off at our yard, or we can collect it. It's a more affordable option than disposing at the landfill and a better outcome for the environment.
