Waikari Bridge on Glenbrook Road opened

Waikari 1 lr

The Waikari Bridge on Glenbrook Road has been officially opened, restoring permanent connectivity to the rural community.

Representatives of Maungaharuru-Tangitū Trust and Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Trust led the opening karakia, which included guests Cushla Tangaere-Manuel - MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, NZTA Director of Regional Relationships Linda Stewart, iwi and kaumātua, contractors and the local community.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the real heroes were the members of the community who became isolated when Cyclone Gabrielle took out the former bridge in February 2023.

Mayor Little acknowledged the disruption for the small rural community. “I was not sure we would get the funding for the temporary ford or this new bridge. Wairoa District Council is fortunate it has a strong, trusting relationship with NZTA, which recognised the need to replace the bridge and supported the Council to do so. We have been very fortunate and remain very appreciative. This has been a team effort, thank you to NZTA, Council staff, the contractors who built the bridge and the community for their patience and support.”
