An international pet nutrient business that focuses on nurturing family companions has its manufacturing roots firmly planted in Wairoa.

Pet Nutrients New Zealand Limited (PNNZ) is a professional brand under the Naturies Health Group dedicated to researching, developing, producing and the global operation of pet nutrition.

The factory is based in the former meat processing plant on Frasertown Road and, although not yet fully commissioned, is already employing local staff.

The business is being run by Luhu Lu and her partner Mike Berndt, whose focus is providing carefree growth and vitality for every ‘fur baby’ by using pure ingredients and scientifically backed formulas.

The extensive product range includes kibble (dry, processed pet food in pellet or chunk form), along with a variety of pet supplements, snacks, treats, and comprehensive pet care products. The range includes health supplements that support digestion, skin, coat and joint health.

Luhu has a background in nutrition and enjoys that the ingredients are 100% New Zealand products, including natural raw materials, where possible. “Our focus is on quality and maximising New Zealand’s clean green image. Our products are premium and have to be to meet the stringent licences and registrations needed to make the products in New Zealand and to export overseas, mainly to China."

Luhu and Mike have been living in Wairoa for the past six months and are enjoying the small-town vibe – particularly when walking their own dogs, Rex, a Border Collie, and Oscar, a Miniature Schnauzer.

“We are excited to be based in Wairoa, with the local site complementing two other factories in Auckland. At the moment we are creating a small amount of product, and that will grow as our processing machinery comes on stream."

The business expects to be fully operational by the end of the year, which would mean producing 1.5 tonnes of kibble per hour, along with other products. The grain-free kibble process starts with dry ingredients, which are sifted and mixed before being compressed, baked, coated in hoki fish oil, and cut into pellets and chunks. The packaging also takes place on site.

Luhu says Wairoa represents a real opportunity for growth and expansion, and with that comes employment.

“Our core brand, Naturies, is a comprehensive scientific nutrition system designed for family members of all ages and lifestyle scenarios across the entire lifecycle. We are proud to have transcended species boundaries by providing nutrition and health care for pets. And it’s all happening in Wairoa.”
