Hīkoi mō te Reo

Hikoi 1

Locals put their best foot forward, stepping out to acknowledge Māori Language Week.

The Hīkoi mō te Reo took place at lunchtime on Monday, with participants walking from the Lighthouse to Mānukanui Pā (Library Green).

The hīkoi aimed to promote te reo Māori and was followed by fun events on the green, including face painting and a free movie in te reo Māori screened at the Gaiety Theatre.

The Māori Language Week events were a partnership collaboration between Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa, Te Wairoa Reorua and the Wairoa District Council, with funding from Te Taura Whiri (Māori Language Commission).

A window display competition was also arranged, encouraging local shops to fill their windows with colour, creativity, and te reo Māori.
