Wairoa District Council is continuing to deliver a high standard in its building consent function, following a recent assessment by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ), the accreditation body appointed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

The lead assessor described the team’s approach during the assessment as marked by patience and kindness, reflecting well on both the professionalism and culture of the Building Consent Authority (BCA).

A number of general non-conformances were identified during the assessment — a routine part of any accreditation review — and the BCA team has since worked through the necessary corrective actions to address them.

Importantly, no serious non-compliance was issued, and the overall result means IANZ’s next assessment of Wairoa District Council will not take place for another two years — a strong vote of confidence in the team’s systems and processes.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Matt Lawson extended his thanks to the building consent team for their ongoing commitment to improvement.

“Staff have ensured we have policies and procedures in place to meet the required standards, and this was demonstrated by no serious non-compliance being issued in this latest visit. This is a great result for the Council and the Building Consent Authority staff, and I thank everyone for their input in helping to achieve this high level.”

The role of the Wairoa Building Consent Authority is to check building plans and issue formal approvals to ensure construction work complies with the national Building Code.

In the 2025-26 year, Wairoa’s BCA issued 82 building consents with a total value of $15.1 million.
