UPDATE SUNDAY APRIL 12 4.30pm
The wind warning and rain watch for the Wairoa district remains in place with wind velocity expected to increase throughout the evening.
We are advising our communities not to be complacent with severe gales forecasted throughout the evening and overnight.
The next MetService update is due at 9pm tonight.
ROAD CLOSURES
SH2 to Gisborne is closed from the bottom of Te Uhi Hill, Wairoa, to Muriwai due to fallen trees across the road. The closure will remain in place until at least 8am Monday April 13 following an engineering assessment.
Tiniroto Road is closed from the Te Reinga turnoff to Gisborne.
METSERVICE UPDATE AS AT 10am (April12)
Strong Wind Warning: Orange
This warning is valid through to 5am Monday 13 April.
Severe gale easterlies, especially about Mahia Peninsula, changing to severe gale north-westerlies Sunday afternoon/evening gusting 130km/h in exposed places. With a moderate chance of upgrading to a Red Warning
Heavy Rain watch: Yellow
This watch is valid from 9am- 7pm Sunday 12 April.
MONITORING
Wairoa’s Emergency Operations Centre is continuing to actively monitor the weather situation and impacts, with a specific focus on land slip risk areas and the roading network where access is currently restricted due to trees down.
We urge whānau to stay home and stay safe.
