Children and Young Adult Services

  • Holiday Programmes

All our programmes for children are FREE.
During the summer break we take part in the ECREAD’N programmes for both children and young adults.  The Childrens Summer Reading Programme is open to all children from 2-12 years, the programme aims to keep children reading in the summer holidays.

All you have to do is read library books and visit the library at least 4 times to tell us about what you have read.  When you visit you get a small gift for telling us about your library book.

When you have visited 4 times during the 6-week programme you are invited to a special celebration party and will receive a medallion, a certificate and a book to keep.

The Young Adult’s Summer Reading Programme is open to all teenagers at high school.

    • Read at least 4 books over 6 weeks
    • Fill in a review sheet for each book and receive a paperbook book in return

Plus – Events!  Workshops!  Fun Finale!

Homework Help

The library provides books, encyclopaedias and CD-ROM’s to assist with homework.  The staff are happy to guide children and young adults in the right direction whenever possible.

Council’s long-term purpose in operating a library service is to enhance the social and cultural well being of the Community.  This is achieved through the provision of access to literature and other learning resources via books and electronic media.

The library is one showcase for demonstrating how communication knowledge and information sharing is evolving and it is a readily accessible means or all in the community to experience those opportunities.

Improving literacy levels through the encouragement of reading may have positive effects on the long-term socioeconomic status of residents.

The Community benefits from a better-informed and more literate community.  Since libraries make information available in the community, may residents value the existence of a library even though they may not use the service themselves.

Wairoa Public Library currently contains around 40,000 items.

For more information relating to the Wairoa Library, you can contact Sandra Hughes at the Wairoa Library, on (06) 838 8450 or visit the Library along Marine Parade.
