The purpose of the Council is to enable democratic local decision-making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the Wairoa District in the present and for the future.

MEDIA RELEASE - ORMOND DRIVE TO REMAIN OPEN AS A RESULT OF IWI DECISION |

Time and money will be saved by Mahia motorists as a result of a decision by the Iwi of Mahia to allow Ormond Drive to remain open for another 12 months.
Closure of the section of road which crosses over part of the Ruawharawhara Urupa at Opoutama was set down for the beginning of August, but this is no longer the case following a meeting of Iwi during the weekend, which resulted in an offer to keep the road open at no further cost to ratepayers.
Mayor Les Probert praised the decision, which demonstrated a desire of Iwi to listen to the wider community and strengthen relationships.

MEDIA RELEASE - MOKO MEMORIAL DONATIONS SOUGHT |

Immortalising Moko in the form of a permanent memorial is the aim of a group of Mahia residents, who are now seeking donations from the public to make it happen.
Wairoa District Council have made the initial donation of $1000 into a bank account set up to raise the cash necessary to build a reminder of the dolphin, who spent most of his short life in the waters off Mahia Beach before being found dead on the shores of Matakana Island earlier this month.

Election of ONE Mayor at large Election of SIX members at large
Nominations for the above positions open on Friday 23 July 2010 and must be made on the appropriate nomination paper for each position, available from the relevant Electoral Officer. Completed nomination documents must be received by the relevant Electoral Officer no later than 12 noon on Friday 20 August 2010. Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 incl GST, payable by eftpos, cash or cheque.

Local Government Elections Nominations Open |

Candidate nominations open on Friday 23 July.
Anyone wanting to stand for Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Wairoa District Council, or the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board should get their nominations in before noon of the closing date of Friday 20 August. A public notice in local papers gives full information on the elections.

MEDIA RELEASE - LAST PUBLIC MEETING FOR DRAFT MAORI POLICY |

An invitation is extended to those with an interest in building a better working relationship between Maori and Wairoa District Council to attend a meeting at Taihoa Marae on Wednesday, July 28 at 5pm.
The main focus of the meeting will be a presentation of the WDC Draft Maori Policy, which is currently in the public consultation arena.

At an Ordinary Meeting of Council held on 8 June 2010 Council resolved to adopt a Draft Maori Policy (Statement of Proposal) for public consultation using the Special Consultative Procedures as prescribed in Sections 83 and 87 of the Local Government Act 2002.
Hardcopies of the draft Maori Policy Information Pack are available, at no charge, from the Council Office, Public Library and Information Centre Wairoa.
Submissions on the Statement of Proposal will be received up until 12.00pm on Wednesday 4 August 2010.
