Abandoned Land

From time-to-time Wairoa District Council sells property as ‘Abandoned Land’. Abandoned land is property where rates have not been paid for three years or more, and where the ratepayer is either unknown, cannot be found or is deceased, or has advised Council that they have abandoned, or intend to abandoned their land.

The process for dealing with abandoned land begins with Wairoa District Council making a public notice of its intent to have the land declared abandoned and then sell or lease the land.

One month after the date of the notice, Wairoa District Council will make an application District Court for an order declaring the land abandoned and granting an order to sell or lease the land. All Abandoned Land in the Wairoa District is sold by tender.

Maori freehold land is not subject to the Abandoned Land provisions.

Currently there is no Abanadoned Land avaliable in the Wairoa District. For more information about Abandoned Land in the Wairoa District please contact the rates department.
