Kitchener Street drain piping set to continue

Kitchener St

The Kitchener Street piping programme is set to continue following the confirmation of Waka Kotahi (NZTA) budgets for the remainder of the financial year.

Last year the first stage of the piping of the open drain was completed with the section between Achilles Street and the hospital/health centre entrance piped and covered in.

That stage involved around 245m of pipe being laid.

The next stage will see a similar distance of piping laid along Kitchener Street between Clyde Road and back to the first hospital entrance.

The project is part of a Wairoa District Council plan to future-proof the town’s stormwater network with the Kitchener Street drain recognised as a major safety issue.

Design work has been completed with Fulton Hogan, which worked on the first section, set to complete the next stage.

The continuation of the project has been made possible through confirmation of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency funding and budgets with the work needing to be completed by the end of June this year to meet the funding criteria.

Wairoa District Council interim chief executive officer Kitea Tipuna said it is great news that the piping of the Kitchener Street drain is able to continue. This work will improve our town and the safety of our residents.

Mr Tipuna acknowledged the work of Council’s assets and services staff for their preparation in having the project ready to continue and meeting the funding criteria within the tight timeframe.
