Funding boost for library

Library

Funding to upskill librarians to provide greater support to library users and bolster reading and digital literacy has been received by the Wairoa District Council.

The initiative is being rolled out by the National Library to lead and support community COVID-19 recovery work across New Zealand’s library system.

The Wairoa District Council will receive around $220,000 to fund the cost of existing library staff for two years.

Wairoa District Council interim chief executive Kitea Tipuna said the funding enables the Council to deliver services to our local people in a sustainable way.

“This really is a big win for us.”

The total funding package is $58.8 million, over two to four years.

The funding recognises libraries are vital community hubs, where people can get practical help during tough economic times.

Librarians support lifelong learning and can assist those looking for work.

Local libraries are safe spaces to access essential online services and to be supported in performing basic digital tasks, such as CV writing and accessing career services.

Mr Tipuna said the funding will provide an excellent resource to complement the soon to be opened digital hub.

The hub is based in the Wairoa library and will complement the technological advancements the library facility is already making.

“Wairoa’s digital hub is another component of the Wairoa District Council’s goal to improve the district’s connectivity. Growing digital capability is a Council cornerstone with the Digital Hub made possible through a $400,000 Provincial Growth Fund investment.”

The hub will feature 12 computers and deliver a range of workshops.

“This additional funding will allow us to stretch our reach and improve Wairoa’s connectivity even further.”

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the timing of the additional funding is perfect. The hub is already going to respond to our community’s needs and this extra recognition will allow us to continue to develop the library as a place where everyone is welcomed to come learn, connect and share.

“The hub will improve local access to the world of technology improving connectivity, knowledge and general wellbeing of Wairoa people and all delivered at no cost to local ratepayers.”
