Great Gaiety entertainment

Wairoa’s Gaiety Theatre is the place to be these school holidays.

Youngsters have been flocking to the big screen with the Trolls World Tour a major drawcard.

Animated children and family movie SamSam premiered at the Gaiety last Thursday and is also a crowd pleaser.

Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May said there has been a lot of uncertainty around movie releases internationally and nationally.

“It is great to have more movies being released and that the Gaiety is able to premiere new releases at the same time as the rest of the country.

“New Zealand film, The Legend of Baron Toa, premiered last Friday night and on Saturday Guns Akimbo, an action comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, also premiered.”

In line with local demand for anime movies My hero Acadamia: Heroes Rising, a Japanese animation movie is also screening.

Coming up is the premiere of the blockbuster movie Tenet, a spy film written and directed by Christopher Nolan and set to release nationally and at the Gaiety on Thursday July 30.

Mr May said there is a real effort to attract people to the Gaiety in a bid to return to pre-COVID usage.

New drawcards include a range of hot food and beverages while still providing the staple favourites of popcorn and ice cream.

The Gaiety has a range of movie merchandise which now includes model plane starter kits and movie posters including a great Kiwiana collection.

Other initiatives include pre-booked group movie nights, establishing a film club and live entertainment starting to return post-COVID.

The theatre is open from Wednesday to Sunday with extra school holiday screenings.
