Before you go away, take time to think about what your animals will be doing while you are away.

Plan ahead if your domestic pets will be at home during the long weekend and ensure that your stock will be controlled or secured, especially near main highways and roads.

At times during long weekends, Animal Control will be called by concerned public to help domestic animals that have been left for days tangled with no shelter or water, barking or unfed.

Often stock will manage to enter onto road verges especially at night. This is a safety risk to people travelling.

The majority of owners are responsible and know how to ensure  that their animals won’t create a nuisance to other people. However, in some situations, the presence of animals can result in issues to others, depending on the animal’s behaviour, the conditions or locations in which the animal is being cared for or when the animal is brought into a public place.

Dogs are valued as companions and working animals. However, if not properly managed and cared for, their welfare can be affected and they have potential to impact negatively on other dogs, humans, animals and the environment.

If you are taking your dog with you, remember temperatures in a vehicle will rise rapidly, even when the windows are open to create a breathing gap.
