Eastland Group Wairoa Contestable Community Grants now open

Council

Wairoa River focused projects will again be recognised through the Eastland Group Wairoa Contestable Community Grants.

Now in its third year, the scheme supports Wairoa-based community-led projects.

Eastland Group has committed to donate $15,000 a year for 10 years to be awarded to local initiatives in recognition of their work around protecting, restoring and health and well-being of the Wairoa River.

The projects should support education and community outreach initiatives as well as encouraging young people to engage in activities that promote healthy relationships with the Wairoa River.

Promoting the relevance and importance of the river in the lives of the Wairoa community is another focus of the grant.

Last year’s winners were Wairoa Community Ngahere Nursery (Nursery Establishment), Adventure Wairoa Inc (Waka Ama Project), Hinemihi Marae (Wairoa Awa Restoration Project) and Ngati Kahungunu, Wairoa Taiwhenua Inc (Project Mauri Compass – Lower Waiau and Wairoa Hopupu).

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little says that there are some awesome projects throughout the district that have a focus on the Wairoa River, and it is great that Eastland Group has agreed to this approach for allocating this fund.

“We heard feedback from the Wairoa community about how this fund should be applied, and it’s so awesome that Eastland Group has responded this way.”

Mr Little said last year’s recipients all played a valuable part in protecting and restoring the river.

“I am thrilled to see the community on board protecting our awa for the whole of our district.

“Seeing people who care for our environment step up in a voluntary capacity is just fantastic.”

Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd said, we are delighted to work with the mayor and the Council to ensure the grant has a positive, wide-reaching impact.

“Every one of last year’s winners is making a long-lasting contribution to the community through their vision and their collaborative approach. We look forward to recognising and supporting more innovative, engaging local initiatives again this year.”

Applications for the grant opened this week and will close on Friday, May 10.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Wairoa District Council website, or you can pick up a copy of the application form from the Wairoa District Council.
