Putere Rd RP 15.15 Dropout Batter Slumping

A section of Putere Road has been closed to allow remedial work to be carried out.

The area of road is 15 kilometres from State Highway 2 at Raupunga.

The closure means traffic will now need to use the Cricklewood Road with signage marking the detour.

The dropout section has a history of slipping, and contractor Fulton Hogan has had a local crew working at the site since last week.

The dropout is on an inside corner and the stablisation work being carried out had already factored in the instability of the area.

Although the corner has now dropped out even more, it hasn’t impacted on the original design work and should not take any longer to repair.

Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May said the site is unstable and closing the road to all traffic was decided to be the safest option.

“We acknowledge closing the road is inconvenient, but safety is our major concern and we appreciate peoples’ patience.

“Council is working with the contractors to stabilise the road and rebuild the shoulder as quickly as possible.

“Once the site has been re-secured a single lane road will be open to traffic.”

Council will keep people informed of the road status.
