Council on high alert following another dog attack

The North Clyde side of town continues to be plagued by dog attacks with more sheep being mauled yesterday morning.

Wairoa District Council compliance team leader Paul van Dorrestein said Council staff have been making a concerted effort to catch the dogs and have received excellent support from the community.

“Everyone is on high alert and fortunately quick action from the property owner yesterday morning meant only two sheep were mauled as he heard the dogs barking and managed to scare them away.

“Yesterday’s attack was at 7.40am in the Kaimoana/Frasertown Road area with the dogs last seen running down Kaimoana Road.

“Council staff have increased their patrols and placed extra traps in the area, and the community is on high alert.

Mr van Dorrestein said the description of the dogs in yesterday’s attack matches the description of the dogs in last week’s attacks where more than 30 sheep were killed in three separate incidents.

The two dogs are described as a large Labrador/Rottweiler cross coloured black with tan facial markings, and a smaller dog described as a stunted Rottweiler with black and tan markings.

“We are disappointed the dogs have attacked again as we had been hoping to have caught them before more animals were mauled.

“We have again checked the properties in the location of the attack and have been unable to locate the dogs.

“We are determined to bring these attacks to a conclusion, and between our patrols and community reports, we hope we get closure sooner rather than later.

Again, a big thanks to everyone who has supported us so far.

If anyone sees any wandering dogs, or dogs acting suspiciously or attacking, please contact the Council straight away on 06 838 7309 24/7, and we will respond as quickly as possible.
