Welfare check “door-knocks” to resume in Wairoa

Over the next couple of days staff from Wairoa District Council, Whānau Ora (Te Whare Maire o Tapuwae), Enabled and Kahungunu executive will be knocking on doors to carry out community welfare and assessment checks.

It’s now been three weeks since Cyclone Gabrielle hit the rohe, the most catastrophic weather event Wairoa has experienced in living memory.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little says while the initial clean-up and assessment has been undertaken, it’s time to re-visit those affected to check what services are required.

“We need to reconcile any new information with what we already have. We’re keen to determine how many people need help with silt removal and what further support they will need over the coming weeks and months for other services,” Mayor Little says.

“People in our community are strong and the stories of whānau helping whānau have been heart-warming.”

However, Mayor Little says while progress has been made around wellbeing priorities such as fuel, food, connectivity, roading and water the community is still vulnerable.
