New Projector needed for Gaiety

gaiety theatre web

After more than six weeks of searching for a solution to the Gaiety Theatre projector woes, repairing the existing equipment is looking unlikely.

Moving forward the best option to ensure movies can continue to be screened is a new projector which is expected to cost around $100,000.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said he knows how disappointed everyone is that the theatre has been unable to run movies since the end of July.

“The ‘Series One’ projector had been made obsolete by the manufacturers, and while we knew replacement parts would be difficult to secure, it was not known how long the projector could continue to operate.

“The Hoyts technical team who we have been working with has some, but not all, of the required parts to attempt to rebuild the projector, and while they will continue to look for the necessary parts, securing them it is not looking promising.

“Given that the current projector is obsolete, even if parts could be sourced, this will be an ongoing issue, making the best option moving forward being to purchase a replacement projector.

“We have identified a replacement projector which is compatible with the current lens and server which will mean cost savings. However, at just over $100,000 we will need to source external funding to pay for a new projector. This process is already underway, and we are hopeful we will be successful.

“This is just a really unfortunate situation, particularly as moviegoers were on the increase with ticket sales forecast to be at the highest over the past four years. We were climbing out of the COVID-19 restrictions, getting some great movies screening, and our community was enjoying the fact we had a local movie theatre.

“The Gaiety Theatre contributes to the vitality and vibrancy of our town. A well-supported local cinema provides economic benefits and enhances tourism and visitor experiences while also bringing the community together strengthening and energising our small town.

“We will continue to keep the community updated on any progress.”
