Animal Control Register Your Dog 01

To take advantage of discounted dog registration pricing you need to register you dog by the end of the month.

The Wairoa District Council dog registration period began on July 1 and if you register your dog before August 31, you can take advantage of discounted pricing which means a saving of $30 per dog.

Registering your dog with your local Council is part of being a responsible dog owner. Registration fees help to fund a range of services that are designed to help dogs, their owners and the wider community.

All dogs in New Zealand must be registered by three months of age. You then need to re-register your dog every year.

Dog registration forms have been sent to dog owners via email or post. If you have a dog and have not received a dog registration form, you should download a registration form from Council’s website https://www.wairoadc.govt.nz/services/animal-education/dog-owners where all forms can be completed online, or contact the Council to register your dog.

It is also an ideal time to update your details and advise Council of any changes, including the number of dogs you own.

There are five dog registration classification categories and pricings. Each category will increase by $30 if the registration is paid after August 31.

Class W ($60) is working dogs as defined under Section 2 of the Dog Control Act 1996. This includes disability assist dogs and dogs kept only for the purpose of driving or herding stock. Please note, dogs that may be used as guard or hunting/pest control dogs are not classed as working dogs.

Class S ($100) is standard dogs which includes most pets, companion, recreational, hunting and family dogs.

Class SO ($90) is the selected owner policy where responsible dog owners receive a 10% discount to encourage owners to take good care of their dogs.

Class Q ($200) is for dogs classified as menacing or belonging to a breed or type or having been observed or had reported behaviour of a dog with characteristics typically associated with the dog’s breed or type which are, listed in Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996.

Class D ($415) is dogs classified as dangerous based on the behaviour of the dog on one or more occasions or the dog owner of the dog has been convicted of an offence in relation to the dog under section 57A (2).
