A local and regional spike in positive COVID-19 cases is a reminder for people to stay vigilant.

Last week there were more than 1500 new cases in Hawke’s Bay, taking the total of active cases to around 2,400 including 47 reported active cases in Wairoa.

People are reminded to follow the COVID-19 precautions by wearing face masks, hand sanitising and social distancing.

If you feel unwell, please have a COVID test and if you are positive stay home.

Those who are eligible should also be thinking about getting their second COVID-19 booster which is targeted at those people who are at risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Kahungunu Executive is running a drop-in clinic every Thursday from 2-6pm for people to receive their COVID-19 and the winter flu vaccinations or have a chat about their vaccination needs. Clinics will start this Thursday, July 14, look out for the van at KE, 65 Queen Street.

KE nursing staff say locally there is a demand for the second booster vaccination, and they encourage people to call in and have a chat about their immunisation needs and those of their whānau.

This Wednesday will also see Te Whatu Ora Health NZ, formerly the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, bring a vaccination bus to the Wairoa Hospital site.

The vaccination fun day will run from 9am-4.30pm and will be offering all COVID-19 vaccinations, the flu vaccination and the MMR (Measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination.

The fun day will also feature free giveaways.

Queen St Practice continue to offer vaccinations throughout the week, just call in or phone for an appointment on 06 838 8333, or take advantage of the drive through clinic which operates every Wednesday from 10am-1pm – excluding this Wednesday when the vaccination bus will be in town.

The following people are recommended to receive a second COVID-19 booster as a priority: 

• people aged 65 years and over
• Māori and Pacific peoples aged 50 years and over
• residents of aged care and disability care facilities 
• severely immunocompromised people who received a three-dose primary course and a fourth dose as a first booster (noting this would be a fifth dose for these people)
• people aged 16 years and over who have a medical condition that increases the risk of severe breakthrough COVID-19 illness and
• people aged 16 years and over who live with disability with significant or complex health needs or multiple comorbidities.
